-Calls for Accountability

Monrovia, Liberia — The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has expressed deep concern over recent violent incidents involving journalists, prompting the organization to demand accountability from the Executive Protective Service (EPS) and the Office of the Press Secretary to the President.

On December 17, journalist Blamo Toe, affiliated with the online publication The Liberian Investigator, was assaulted by EPS agent Korvah Jomah while covering a protest on Capitol Hill. The demonstration was centered around the ongoing leadership crisis within the House of Representatives. According to Toe, Jomah aggressively strangled him during a live broadcast, disrupting his coverage and causing minor injuries to his finger. “Not being satisfied with his ruthless acts, he physically attacked me and choked my neck,” Toe recounted, adding that while his equipment sustained some damage, he managed to protect his gadgets from severe harm.

In a separate alarming incident on the evening of December 18, journalist Austin Kawah’s vehicle was firebombed while he was on-air hosting his program, Freedom Hard Talk. Unknown assailants reportedly used a motorcycle to launch a petrol bomb at his parked vehicle outside the radio station. The motive behind this attack remains unclear, but it raises serious concerns about targeted violence against journalists in Liberia, particularly those who express critical views on governance.

The PUL has reached out to the EPS and the Office of the Press Secretary, highlighting the need for a thorough investigation into these assaults. The union emphasized that the conduct of state security personnel must align with the principles of respect and support for the press, especially as journalists fulfill their vital role in society.

“The PUL views these incidents as grave violations of press freedom and an abuse of power by those entrusted with ensuring public safety,” stated a representative from the union. “We stand firmly in our commitment to defending the rights of journalists to inform the public and hold political and business entities accountable without fear of reprisal or intimidation.”

In light of these incidents, the PUL urges all journalists in Liberia to remain vigilant and adhere to professional and ethical standards in their reporting. It is crucial to differentiate between factual reporting and personal opinions, ensuring transparency and integrity in all journalistic endeavors.

The Press Union of Liberia says it remains dedicated to advocating for the safety and protection of journalists and will continue to monitor these incidents closely. The organization is committed to engaging with relevant authorities to ensure justice and promote a secure environment for all media practitioners in Liberia.
