Monrovia – Hon. Rugie Yartu Barry, the Representative for District #1 in Montserrado County, has firmly addressed the growing controversy surrounding allegations of bribery linked to a resolution aimed at the removal of Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa from the House of Representatives.

The statement comes in response to reports that some members of the legislature may have accepted monetary inducements to support the resolution for Speaker Koffa’s ousting, particularly spotlighting several women legislators involved in the matter.

“I want to be unequivocal: my signature on the resolution was not influenced by any cash or monetary incentives,” Hon. Barry declared. “My involvement was strictly to address important policy and procedural issues within the House of Representatives, not to facilitate the Speaker’s removal.”

She explained that the discussions surrounding her signature focused on critical legislative matters, including the removal of district development funds from the budget and proposed amendments to the House rules—issues that are vital to the functioning of the legislature. “Engaging in discussions about procedural matters is a normal part of our legislative duties,” she stated, emphasizing that such activities should not be misconstrued as unethical behavior.

Hon. Barry expressed her dismay over the allegations of bribery, stating, “It has come to my attention that some members of the House are alleged to have received money for their signatures to remove the Speaker. For the record, I, Rugie Yatu Barry, did not receive any money to support such a move.” She underscored her commitment to integrity, asserting, “I have built my character throughout my life and will not allow it to be tarnished by unfounded claims.”

Hon. Barry announced her official withdrawal from the petition to remove Speaker Koffa. “Therefore, I hereby withdraw my signature from this petition,” she stated decisively. In closing, the Montserrado County District # 1 Representative called for calm among her colleagues and urged all parties to engage in constructive dialogue. “Let us take a step back and focus on the business of the Liberian people,” she implored, emphasizing the need for unity and cooperation in the legislature. This statement aims to clarify Hon. Barry’s position amidst the ongoing allegations and reaffirm her commitment to ethical governance and public service.
