-As House signals Finance Ministry to act swiftly

During the House of Representatives regular session, Thursday, February 29, 2024, Bong County District #6 Representative Moima Briggs Mensah  raised a red flag over the extended delay in Liberia’s budget approval, urging immediate action from the executive branch.

Representative Briggs Mensah expressed concern over the lack of response from the executive to a communication indicating the expected return of the budget on the 15th of February.

This silence has left the budget in a state of uncertainty with vital programs linked to line ministries hanging in the balance.

Highlighting the critical need for timely budget approval, Rep. Briggs Mensah cautioned against delays in March, urging fellow lawmakers to treat the matter with utmost seriousness. “I think this is not a good start,” asserted the representative, calling for action to address the issue.

To bring clarity to the budget timeline, Rep. Briggs Mensah called for the Finance Minister’s presence in the plenary, emphasizing the minister’s crucial role in transparent communication to avoid negative public perception.

The call to action resonated through the plenary, underlining the collective responsibility of legislators to ensure the timely approval of pivotal financial matters for the benefit of the Liberian people.

Her quest is also motivated by the need for President Boakai’s agenda and programs to effectively work. It is also intended to ensure that line ministries and agencies are proactive.

As concerns intensify, the urgency to tackle the budget delay takes center stage in parliamentary discussions during Thursday’s session.

Plenary has mandated its Chief Clerk, Mildred Sayon, to write a communication to the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, reminding him to resubmit the budget.
