Montserrado County, Liberia — Bong County District #3 Representative Mavin Cole has officially resigned from the National Patriotic Party (NPP), citing issues with the party’s leadership and governance. In a letter addressed to Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, the former Vice President and NPP Standard Bearer, the lawmaker expressed his concerns over his recent suspension at the legislature and the party’s direction.
Representative Cole’s resignation stems from what he considers “the endorsement of his suspension” by the NPP’s national chairman, George Sylvester Mulbah, and certain executive members. He claims that he was not given a fair opportunity to defend himself, violating the party’s bylaws and constitution.
In his letter, Cole highlighted the ongoing legislative impasse that has contributed to what he calls his “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional” suspension. He criticized the party leadership for failing to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of its members.
Despite his departure, Cole expressed gratitude for the support he received from the NPP since joining in 1997. He noted that he had successfully contested for a legislative seat twice under the party’s banner.
He emphasized the importance of leadership that prioritizes the constitution and the well-being of the people. After consultations with family, friends, and political allies, he concluded that he could no longer remain with the NPP. In closing, the Bong County District #3 Representative reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law and wished the NPP and the people of Bong County well.
The root cause
Tensions escalated on October 17, 2024, when 47 members sought to remove Speaker J. Fonati Koffa over allegations of misconduct. Following a controversial election, Representative Richard Nagbe Koon was declared the “new Speaker,” a move many labeled fraudulent.
On December 13, 2024, the “Majority Bloc” of the House suspended four members under Rule 48.7(c) for violations. The suspended lawmakers are Frank Saah Foko Jr., Eugine K.M. Kollie, Zinnah Norman, and Alex S. Noah. Their suspension lasts thirty session days, during which they will forfeit salaries and benefits. Additionally, on November 19, 2024, three more lawmakers—Edward P. Flomo, Abu Kamara, and Marvin Cole—were suspended for one month due to misconduct.
Six suspended lawmakers from the House of Representatives of the 55th National Legislature of the Republic of Liberia are facing a “No Go Zone” order, preventing them from attending the upcoming State of the Nation Address on January 27, 2025, at 4:00 PM.
