The plenary of the Liberian Senate has mandated its Committee on Transport, to probe into matter relating to the sudden disappearance of the National Transit Authority buses, which is to be used for public transportation.

During the Senate regular session, the concern was flagged by River Gee County Senator, Jonathan Boye Charles Sogbie.

The lawmaker stressed that the NTA, as an institution, is responsible for providing affordable transport services for the citizens.

He emphasized that it was based on this responsibility of the government’s entity, the people and government of India provided Liberia 45 brand new buses to ease the high cost of transportation.

Contrary to this, he said it has been observed that the buses have disappeared from the main streets of the nation’s capital without an update from the National Transit Authority about the whereabouts of those vehicles.

Senator Sogbie noted that the unavailability of the buses is causing inconveniences for students, struggling mothers, and fathers thus forcing them to wait and fight under the rain and sun to find a tricycle, motorbike, or taxi cap to get to their various destinations.

He further called on the leadership of the Liberian Senate to probe the matter as it was his major concern to curb the burden of transportation to bring relief to the citizens.

More to Senator Sogbie’s concern, Montserrado County Senator, Abraham Darius Dillon termed the concern by his legislative colleague as grave and should be referred to the Senate Committee on Transport to report back to plenary for appropriate action.

Senator Dillon claimed that those in authority at the National Transit Authority are very cold with poor managerial skills to ensure the effective operations of that public entity properly.

The concern was forwarded to the Senate Committee on Transport to report back to the plenary on Thursday, July 13, 2023.
