Man cuts off neighbor’s hand, as mob sets his house ablaze

NIMBA COUNTY: In Liberia, women have always suffered different forms of violence. An accountant of the Nimba County University in Sanniquellie, Daniel Nya Tokpah, has allegedly cut off Ms. Jessica David, believed to be his neighbor’s wife, with a machete.

The tragedy occurred during the early hours of Sunday, April 7, 2024, in Ganta City, Jacob Town Community, Zone 2.

The aftermath of the horror hand-cutting was shared on social media with several videos circulating.

Daniel Tokpa in his late 50s allegedly cut the lady’s hand and stabbed her in the chest and back multiple times with a cutlass on accusation trans-passing in his yard.

33-year-old Jessica David was walked through suspect Daniel Nya Tokpah’s yard when he approached her and stabbed her several times with a machete. 

Horrific video of the attack shows her fighting for her life, her left hand cut off on the ground as bystanders try to help and take her to a hospital.

In a shocking incident, an angry crowd set Tokpah’s house on fire and called for his death. Tokpah has been arrested by state security in the area.

The swift retaliation by the angry crowd reflects the intensity of emotions stirred by the incident.

Citizens and residents of Ganta City are however calling on state securities to bring the alleged perpetrator to book to bring justice to Jessica David. 

Daniel Tokpah,50s, is also accused of attempted murder in connection with Jessica’s gruesome attack, who has been admitted to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. 

Eyewitnesses of a terrifying cutlass attack have described the action as a “crazy” and “gruesome” moment of the man purported to be educated.

Following the commission of the act, suspect Daniel Tokpah absconded the scene and was later arrested by the Crime Service Division (CDS) of the Liberia National Police, Ganta detail in a nearby community for preliminary investigation.

Article IV (THE RIGHTS TO LIFE, INTEGRITY AND SECURITY OF THE PERSON 1) of the Maputo Protocol provides that every woman must be entitled to respect for her life. It reads, “Every woman shall be entitled to respect for her life and the integrity and security of her person. All forms of exploitation, cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment and treatment shall be prohibited.” 

It recommends, “2. States Parties shall take appropriate and effective measures to: a) Enact and enforce laws to prohibit all forms of violence against women including unwanted or forced sex whether the violence takes place in private or public; b) Adopt such other legislative, administrative, social and economic measures as may be necessary to ensure the prevention, punishment and eradication of all forms of violence against women.

Article IV (THE RIGHTS TO LIFE, INTEGRITY AND SECURITY OF THE PERSON 1) of the Maputo Protocol c) stressed the need for government to identify the causes and consequences of violence against women. 

“Identify the causes and consequences of violence against women and take appropriate measures to prevent and eliminate such violence; d) Actively promote peace education through curricula and social communication in order to eradicate elements in traditional and cultural beliefs, practices and stereotypes which legitimise and exacerbate the persistence and tolerance of violence against women.”
