SANNIQUELLIE, NIMBA COUNTY, LIBERIA — In a demonstration of the enduring partnership between the United States and Liberia, Mark C. Toner, the U.S. Ambassador to Liberia, paid a courtesy visit to Nimba County on March 20, 2025. The visit, aimed at assessing the county’s development progress and exploring avenues for enhanced collaboration, was marked by warm receptions and productive discussions with local leaders, including Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono.
Ambassador Toner was greeted at the County Seat in Sanniquellie by Superintendent Gono, alongside county officials, elders, women, and students. The visit underscored the U.S. government’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s development goals, particularly in Nimba County, which has been a focal point of transformative initiatives under Superintendent Gono’s leadership.
During his visit, Ambassador Toner commended Superintendent Gono for the remarkable progress made in Nimba County under her administration. “I am deeply impressed by the strides being taken here in Nimba,” he said. “The ongoing developments are a testament to the dedication and vision of your leadership.”
The Ambassador emphasized the importance of continued U.S. support to ensure the county achieves its development objectives. “My visit today is not just a gesture of respect but also an opportunity to understand how we can further assist in advancing Nimba’s growth,” he stated.
Ambassador Toner highlighted the critical role of local governance in driving economic growth and sustainable development. “The work being done here is not just vital for Nimba but for the entire nation of Liberia. Strong local leadership is the foundation of national progress,” he added.

In her response, Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono expressed profound gratitude for the U.S. government’s unwavering support. “The partnership between Nimba County and the United States has been instrumental in our development efforts,” she said. “We are deeply appreciative of the Ambassador’s visit and his commitment to strengthening this relationship.”
Superintendent Gono also highlighted the potential for mutual benefit through shared knowledge and collaboration. “By working together, we can address pressing challenges such as environmental sustainability and create a brighter future for our people,” she said.
