Vice President Jeremiah Koung, on behalf of the government of Liberia and President Joseph, generously donated a significant amount of food items to the administration of Monrovia Central Prison on July 23, 2024. The donation included 100 bags of 25kg rice, seven containers of oil, 10 cartons of fish, five cartons of washing flora, and other essential items.
The Vice President expressed that the donation was a gesture of solidarity with the people of Liberia as they celebrated the country’s 177th independence anniversary. He emphasized that the government’s support was aimed at addressing food shortages within the prison and ensuring that the prisoners and their families were cared for during this important national celebration.
During his visit to the prison, Vice President Koungacknowledged the challenges faced by the facility, particularly regarding overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure. He stressed the importance of providing prisoners with a comfortable and conducive environment that would allow them to focus on rehabilitation and education.
Vice President Koung also mentioned plans to work with his legal team and President Boakai to address the issue of overcrowding and explore ways to improve conditions within the Monrovia Center Prison. He emphasized the need to prioritize the well-being of all prisoners, especially those with minor offenses, to ensure a safe and supportive environment within the facility.
