Students of Gbarma Central High School in Gbarma District, Gbarpolu County on Monday commenced a week protest demanding the school administration to provide a Mathematics teacher.
The students who were mostly 12th graders stated that their actions would continue till the Ministry of Education can address the issue.
Speaking to the Women Voices Newspaper, the leader of the students, student Musu Vicent averred that for the last three months, the school has been lacking teachers in the field of Mathematics and other science subjects.
“For three months now we don’t have a math teacher,” Musu said in a telephone conversation. She alleged that the son the the school principal who lives in Monrovia is the math teacher of the school. He added that he occasionally goes to class.
“The man who is teaching us math is our principal son. This is the reason why every time we complain he does not take action to announce the need for teachers in the school.”
She added that due to the lack of teachers in the school, twelve graders of the 2023/2024 school year were unable to sit the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Exam – WASSCE.
“We are calling on the Government through the Ministry of Education to take action because it is this same reason that caused the twelve graders from last year not to take WASSCE.” Musu Vicent averred.
However, it can be recorded, that a few months ago, the principal of the Gbarma Central High School Mr. Blame Konneh was alarmed over the shortage of mathematics and English Language teachers at the Gbarma Central High School.
He intimated further that one teacher cannot cover all the topics specified in mathematics as well as the English Language, as teachers of the two subjects continue to complain about the huge task.
During the interview, Mr. Konneh called on the Ministry of Education to assign additional teachers for Literature, Algebra, Grammar, Geometry, Trigonometry, phonics, and composition among others.
