April 24, 2025 — Monrovia, Liberia: In a firm and resolute statement issued yesterday, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. addressed the nation concerning the recent Supreme Court ruling on the ongoing legislative impasse in Liberia’s House of Representatives. The President emphasized his acknowledgment of the court’s decision while reaffirming the government’s commitment to resolving the crisis and maintaining stability.

The Supreme Court of Liberia, the nation’s highest judicial authority, delivered its ruling on April 23, 2025, relating to a Bill of Information connected to the deadlock within the House of Representatives. Although the ruling was accepted, President Boakai noted that the core issues within the legislature remain unaddressed.

“My government has already begun broad consultations with relevant national stakeholders, including traditional and other community leaders, to determine the most constitutionally sound and appropriate way forward,” President Boakai stated. “We remain committed to upholding the sanctity of our democracy and the fundamental principle of three separate but equal branches of government.”

The President underscored the importance of constitutional provisions regarding quorum, which are vital for the functioning of the legislative body. “We will continue to work with the quorum that will ensure the full functioning of our government,” he affirmed.

The statement also touched on recent troubling events, including the torching of the Capitol Building—a symbol of Liberia’s democracy—and acts of vandalism targeting public institutions. “We have witnessed acts of lawless destruction aimed at sowing chaos and discord,” Boakai said. “The police are actively investigating these incidents.”

Underlining his leadership’s stance, President Boakai made it clear that Liberia’s government would not be hostage to narrow interests or lawlessness. “The work of governance must go on,” he declared. “Those who seek to undermine peace or violate the law will face the full force of justice.”

Calling on all Liberians to remain peaceful and confident, the President urged citizens to continue their daily lives without fear. “Your government remains functional and committed to serving the people, maintaining order, and upholding democratic values,” he assured.

He also appealed to political leaders to honour their oaths of office and prioritize national unity over division. “Liberia is greater than any individual, party, or position,” he emphasized.

As efforts continue to find a political resolution to the legislative deadlock, President Boakai urged calm and patriotism, reminding the nation of its shared purpose. “We will protect our democracy, preserve our peace, and move Liberia forward—together.”

The President’s address concludes with a call for unity and a prayer for the nation’s continued progress, affirming his dedication to the prosperity of Liberia.

Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to accept the recent Supreme Court ruling and to refrain from taking any actions that could undermine the rule of law in Liberia. The Court’s decision, which has significant political and constitutional implications, has sparked widespread calls for respect and adherence to judicial authority from various sectors of society.

Several prominent political parties and politicians have publicly urged President Boakai to honour the Supreme Court’s ruling. Among them is former President George Weah, who emphasized the importance of upholding the judiciary’s independence and warned that any attempt to undermine the Court’s decision could have severe consequences for national stability. Weah cautioned that disregarding the ruling might plunge the country into chaos, further destabilizing Liberia’s fragile peace and democratic progress.

Additionally, Alexander Cummings, the Political Leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), has called on President Boakai to do what is necessary to maintain constitutional order. Cummings stressed that respecting the judiciary’s authority is essential for the preservation of Liberia’s democratic institutions and urged the President to act in the best interest of the nation by accepting the Court’s verdict.

The pressure for compliance is not limited to political figures alone. The Press Union of Liberia, along with other civil society organizations and members of the religious community, have issued unified statements advocating for adherence to the rule of law. They emphasized that respecting judicial decisions is fundamental to safeguarding Liberia’s democracy and ensuring justice for all citizens.

These collective appeals highlight a broad consensus across Liberia’s political and civil society landscape that President Boakai must accept the Court’s ruling and avoid any actions that could undermine the judiciary’s integrity. The prevailing sentiment is that adherence to constitutional processes is crucial for maintaining peace, stability, and the rule of law in Liberia during this critical period.
