-For her refusal to accept the role of traditional bushmaster

In a recent interview conducted in Bomi County, an alarming revelation was made regarding the society’s targeting of Amie Kromah for her refusal to accept the role of traditional bushmaster following her grandmother’s death. Reports from Lower Bong County indicate that this position is hereditary, leaving the chosen individual with no option to decline. Disturbingly, refusal to accept this role can result in severe consequences, including death.

Mrs. Salimatu J. Kromah, Amie’s mother, revealed that her daughter, a practicing Muslim, is reluctant to join the traditional society due to the negative experiences of her other children who participated. She expressed concern over the lack of benefits and the burdensome traditional practices that have not contributed positively to society.

During a telephone interview, Amie Kromah voiced her frustration about the ongoing traditional practices that infringe on women’s rights in Liberia. She stated, “As a Liberian citizen, my life is under serious threat,” referring to her mother’s report to the Liberia National Police (LNP), which advised them to distance themselves from traditional groups. Amie emphasized her belief in equality, justice, and human rights, and she criticized the oppressive traditions that force women into roles against their will.

She urged fellow Liberians to stand against such discriminatory practices, and highlighted the country’s long history of civil strife, including women’s rights violations, rampant sexual violence, and barriers to female education. Amie lamented the government’s inaction, particularly the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which has failed to address these pressing issues.

While acknowledging that cultural traditions are deeply rooted and challenging to change, Amie insisted that progress cannot be achieved by perpetuating practices that foster inequality and injustice. She called upon the Government of Liberia to collaborate with international partners, NGOs, and local organizations to advocate for women’s rights and to prevent the coercion of women into traditional roles.

In her concluding remarks, Amie Kromah appealed to the international community to take a proactive stance against leadership that violates women’s rights in Liberia. “Let us stand together in solidarity with the women of Liberia and support their fight for equality, justice, and empowerment,” she urged.
