-Following Capitol Hill Protest and Fire Incident
The Women NGO Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) expresses deep concern over the recent series of events that have shaken the nation, including the protest and the devastating fire at the Capitol Building in Monrovia. These incidents highlight the growing challenges we face as a nation and call for immediate reflection, unity, and decisive action.
The Capitol Building, a symbol of our democracy and the seat of legislative authority sustained significant damage in the fire, with a substantial portion of the Joint Chambers destroyed. While preliminary reports suggest an electrical fault may have caused the blaze, WONGOSOL urges the Government of Liberia to conduct a transparent and thorough investigation into both the fire and the circumstances surrounding the protest. These back-to-back events underscore the urgency of addressing the political and social tensions that threaten the fabric of our nation.
As advocates for national development and the rule of law, WONGOSOL acknowledges the right of citizens to assemble and express their grievances peacefully. However, we stress the importance of doing so in a manner that safeguards public safety and upholds the principles of democracy. The tragic fire incident compounds an already fragile political climate, where legislators have been engaged in prolonged verbal and physical altercations. At this critical moment, WONGOSOL calls for calm, constructive dialogue and collective action to resolve the ongoing impasse.
This volatile situation, if not handled with care, risks deterring investors from engaging with Liberia, which could set back much-needed economic progress. Such a setback would disproportionately affect women, girls, and the youth of our nation, who are already striving for equal opportunities and economic empowerment. As the umbrella organization representing women in Liberia, WONGOSOL calls on lawmakers to prioritize the country’s interests by finding a swift resolution to the legislative deadlock.
Furthermore, we call on the judiciary to provide clarity regarding Article 33 of the Constitution, which has been a source of significant controversy since the Supreme Court’s opinion on December 6, 2024. Resolving these ambiguities is essential to restoring confidence in our institutions and moving the nation forward.
The Women NGO Secretariat of Liberia remains committed to promoting peace, stability, and development. Liberia has overcome significant trials before, and the resilience of its people continues to be a source of strength. We urge all parties involved to come together in the spirit of national solidarity, upholding democratic principles, and working towards solutions that protect and strengthen the foundations of our beloved country, Liberia
