Sinkor, Liberia – As it wraps up the calendar year, the Women NGO Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) on Thursday, December 12, 2024, commenced its two-day Annual Convening. The event, themed “Exploring the Past, Reviewing the Present, and Planning for the Future: A Pathway for Growth,” focused on the progress and challenges facing women in Liberia. The convening is taking place at the Lutheran Conference Hall on 13th Street, Sinkor, Liberia.
“An amazing chapter for WONGOSOL”
In the opening statement and overview of the convening, WONGOSOL Executive Director Mrs. Esther S. Davis Yangohighlighted that 2024 has been a transformative chapter for WONGOSOL, marked by impactful advocacy, capacity-building initiatives, and community engagement. “Today, as we gather to reflect, strategize, and celebrate, let us honor the dedication of everyone who contributes to our work,” she urged.
Among the key achievements she noted were: Advocacy for Change: WONGOSOL led robust campaigns that resulted in significant policy advancements in gender equality, education access, and social justice. Community forums and stakeholder engagements ensured that grassroots voices were heard in critical national decision-making processes.
According to her, the organization successfully conducted a series of trainings, empowering over 700 women and youth with essential leadership and technical skills. Specialized workshops on advocacy strategies equipped community leaders to champion their causes effectively, particularly in women’s empowerment. She said WONGOSOL supported over 20 grassroots projects addressing various community-specific challenges, from harmful traditional practices to education and environmental sustainability. The organization also provided mentorship and resources to cultivate a new generation of change-makers.
The network of partners expanded across sectors, forging impactful alliances that amplified WONGOSOL’s efforts. New funding opportunities allowed for the scaling of existing programs and the launch of innovative initiatives. Mrs. Ya go further noted that WONGOSOL implemented awareness-raising programs on climate change, convening its first Climate Action Initiative to unite stakeholders in addressing climate challenges with localized solutions.
She took a moment to acknowledge the invaluable support from various network organizations and partners, including UN Women, Kvinna till Kvinna, and the British Embassy, among others. “The challenges we face demand our continued commitment and innovative approaches,” she noted. “Let us leverage the momentum of 2024 as we step into 2025 with renewed purpose and determination.”
Moreover, Mrs. Yango encouraged attendees to push boundaries, build stronger collaborations, and continue making a difference in the lives of those they serve. “Together, we are creating a brighter, more equitable future for all,” she concluded, welcoming everyone to an inspiring two-day convening.
Reflect, Assess, and Plan
In her keynote address, Senator Dabah M. Varpilah of Grand Cape Mount County stressed the significance of the convening coinciding with the global observance of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, and urged attendees to unite in the fight to end violence against women. Varpilahunderscored three key concepts for the gathering: Reflect, Assess, and Plan. She began by reflecting on the historical challenges faced by women in Liberia, recalling a time when girls were denied access to education and women were excluded from decision-making processes.
She celebrated the milestones achieved in advocating for gender equality and empowering women, recognizing the efforts of WONGOSOL in bringing critical issues to the forefront. “Reflecting on the past is not just about recognizing success; it is also about understanding the resilience, collaboration, and vision that have brought us this far,” she said. “We must honor the trailblazers—women like Madam Suacoco, Madam Angie Brooks Randall, and Madam Leymah Gbowee—whose courage and dedication paved the way for progress.”
As she assessed the current landscape, Varpilah noted the significant strides made by WONGOSOL in advancing gender equality and empowering women. However, she also acknowledged the persistent barriers that remain, including socioeconomic inequalities and deeply entrenched cultural norms that continue to hinder progress. “Even as we celebrate our accomplishments, we must remain grounded in the realities of the present,” she cautioned. “The work is far from over.”
Looking to the future, the senator called for bold action and strategic partnerships to create lasting change. She outlined key areas of focus, including deepening collaborations with like-minded organizations, investing in capacity building for women and girls, championing innovation through technology, and maintaining continuous advocacy for women’s rights. “Let us not cease our advocacy against all forms of violence—whether physical, educational, or economic,” Senator Varpilah urged. “We must hold ourselves accountable for the impact of our efforts and ensure that resources are allocated effectively to achieve meaningful results.”
Concluding her address, Senator Varpilah emphasized the immense power of collective action, encouraging attendees to unite with a shared purpose. “When we come together with open hearts and minds, there is no limit to what we can achieve,” she said. “Let this convening be a source of inspiration and a springboard for bold ideas and impactful solutions.” The senator expressed her confidence in WONGOSOL’s ability to drive transformative change for women in Liberia, leaving the audience inspired and motivated to continue their vital work in the pursuit of equality and justice.
Hailing WONGOSOL’s Commitment
Also at the occasion, Comfort Lamptey, the UN Women Liberia Country Representative emphasized the significance of this year as Liberia prepares for the Beijing+30 review, a pivotal moment to reaffirm commitments made under the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. She highlighted the collaborative efforts between UN Women and WONGOSOL in championing initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s political participation, promoting economic empowerment, and combating gender-based violence.
“Our shared advocacy has led to the development of impactful policies, including the Domestic Violence Act, which has strengthened the resilience of women and girls across the nation,” Lamptey stated. “Together, we have made strides toward creating a more equitable society.”
As the Annual Convening commenced, Lamptey called on attendees to honor the incredible leadership and achievements of WONGOSOL and the myriad women’s organizations it represents. She underlined the importance of continued collaboration and commitment to advancing the rights and opportunities of women in Liberia.
