…Urged To Use Their Opportunity To Reduce Poverty And Promote Sustainable Livelihoods
Monrovia: The Unique Vocational Training Center (UVTC) has graduated about 20 young women after completing six months of training in various skills including customotogist, Interior and Event decorations, soap making, pastry, and tailoring.
The occasion marked the 1st graduation ceremony of the institution held at the Christ-Ordained Healing Temper Church in Pipeline, Paynesville.
In a keynote address, Mr. Abraham Tumbey, UNDP ProgrammeCoordinator of Inclusive Growth Sustainable Development Pillar congratulated the women for embarking on a new and remarkable journey in their lives.
Speaking on the theme “What Values Define You”, Mr. Tumbeyurged the women to reflect on the core values that will shape not only their careers but also the lives they lead, the legacy they leave behind, and contributions to the development of a better and prosperous Liberia as they take the next steps into their various communities, Liberia, and the world at large.
He also told the women that the values that embody them are the compass that guides their actions and decisions because values are the principles that define who we are.
Mr. Tumbey encouraged the graduates as they stand on the threshold of their future to consider the following values, integrity, dedication, respect, perseverance, and compassion which can help define their journey and shape the future and destiny of Liberia.
“As you step into the world beyond these walls, I invite you to ponder the question “What values define you?” Identify those values that resonate with your essence and let them guide every decision you make. Your integrity, dedication, respect, compassion, and perseverance will not only define who you are but will also set the tone for the impact you will have on your community and beyond. These values will set you apart andopen doors for you,” he added. “Despite all the challenges Liberia faces as a country, as I look around this room, I believe and hope for a brighter future,” he said.
Mr. Tumbey believes that Liberia can rise above the ills of underdevelopment, corruption, and all the ills that have set the country backward after more than 177 years of existence. He highlighted that despite its vast resources and huge development potential, Liberia, like many countries in Africa, faces several challenges that impact the development of its youth.
“As you graduate today, remember that your journey is just beginning. I say to you today. The sky is just the beginning. Work hard, be dedicated to your vocation, and hold fast to your values. You are the future of Liberia equip yourselves with integrity, and you will not only succeed but also inspire others,” he urged the women.
Also, in a brief remark, the Chief Executive Officer of UVTC Madam Abigail Zean in a statement told the graduates that over their six months at UVTC, they mastered the courage, dedication, and a willingness to learn key skills in their chosen skills to succeed in a lifelong journey.
“I want you to know that graduation is a moment in your life that you will always remember. Be proud of what you have achieved and remember those who have supported you to reach this far. I want you to recognize that you are unique in your skills therefore, I encourage you to make the most of what you have learned. I would be one of the proudest CEOs to see you become a great entrepreneur, trainer, etc,” she stated.
Madam Zean reminded the women that as they have been skilled society awaits them and they have the opportunity to contribute to government efforts to reduce poverty and promote sustainable livelihoods. For their part, the graduates appreciated the UVTC for allowing them to acquire lifelong skills. According to them, the UVTC has not only impacted their lives but made them an asset to the country and their communities at large.
The women believed that with the knowledge acquired, they could contribute to their families financially cater to the needs of children, and also further their education journey. The UVTC is a humanitarian established on February 20, 2024, with dedication to improving the skills and productivity of youth, including both girls and boys, as well as women and men.
The institution focuses on providing technical and vocational training, along with new methodologies and technologies, to foster professional growth, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. The center offers 11 vocational and technical training programs and provides support to individuals who have the desire to learn but lack the financial means.
