The Zone 4.2 West Africa Chess Championship has kicked off Liberia at the Creek Lodge Hotel in Marshall City, Margibi County.
According to the organizers, the tournament has two sections– the Open Section and the Female Section.
Each African Federation features five participants for each section but the host nation(Liberia) has an option of registering up to 7 participants.
This year’s West African Championship is the third major chess event that Liberia has hosted.
The first was the West African Zonal Chess Tournament hosted in 2017, the second was the Junior Chess Championship in 2021.
The week-long tournament has already started to attract the attention of boys and girls from 12 African Countries who are locking horns in the nine-round Swiss tournament.
Speaking with reporters, Liberia Chess Federation president, Thomas Karyah expressed confidence that the tournament will be a success story for Liberia and those from the West Africa region.
“This is a good opportunity for us to showcase our talent in chess as a country and certainly I believe others will do their best to respond to their respective countries” he added.
“If we invest more into chess development in Liberia, our country will do better in the tournament,” he added. “But we are also eying winning the crown for the championship. We trust our players to get us the crown.”
