The Honorable House of Representativesโ€”HORโ€”has mandated its joint committee on Education, Ways, Means, Finance, Development Planning, and Judiciary to review a bill seeking the Rivercess Community Collegeโ€”RCCโ€”in Cestos City.

The Plenary was decided on Thursday, January 30, 2025, based upon a communication from Rivercess County District 2 Representative, Steve Tequah.

Representative Tequah said the bill, when enacted into law, will provide numerous benefits, including increased access to education, skill development and workforce readiness, community engagement, and lifelong learning.

The Rivercess County lawmaker added that the bill will also improve economic growth, cultural and social development, and partnerships with local industries.

He thinks that the enactment of the Rivercess Community College bill represents a significant step toward empowering the local community through education and skill development.

The bill has gone through its first reading as the joint committee will scrutinize it and report to plenary for legislative action.

Meanwhile, the Plenary of the House of Representatives has summoned the Minister of Public Works to address the legislative body on action plans for the reconstruction of the completely damaged Cestos River Bridge at ITI, which connects River Cess, Sinoe, and Grand Kru Counties.

The decision was reached during the 6th Day sitting of the 1st Quarter of the 2nd Session on Thursday, 30 January. The plenaryโ€™s decision was triggered by a communication from Sinoe County Electoral District #2 Representative, Hon. Samson Wiah, requesting the Minister to provide a comprehensive plan for the bridge’s reconstruction.

Hon. Wiah emphasized in his communication that the Buchanan (Grand Bassa County) to Greenville (Sinoe County) road corridor is a critical inter-county route essential for human development activities, trade, commerce, and healthcare delivery. Given the bridge’s strategic importance, he urged the plenary to summon the Minister to present clear plans for its rehabilitation.

Additionally, Representative Wiah called on the Minister of Public Works to provide updates on the ongoing pavement, reconstruction, or rehabilitation of road corridors from Grand Bassa County through River Cess, Sinoe, and Grand Kru to Maryland County.

The Minister is expected to appear on Tuesday, 4 February.

The House of Representatives remains committed to ensuring the effective implementation of infrastructure projects that enhance connectivity and economic growth in Liberia.
